Designing Learning Communities & Membership Experiences
Overview
Across multiple projects, I have designed and managed membership and community-based learning environments using WordPress, bespoke membership platforms and Substack.
These spaces were designed to do more than host content. They were intended to support engagement, reflection, connection and ongoing development through a combination of structured learning pathways, community interaction and self-directed exploration.
The Challenge
Many online learning communities struggle to maintain engagement beyond the initial point of enrolment.
Common challenges include:
Content overwhelm
Low participation
Unclear learner pathways
Declining engagement over time
Difficulty translating learning into action
The challenge was not simply to organise content, but to create environments that helped members navigate information, participate meaningfully and remain engaged over time.
My Role
Membership architecture and design
Learning pathway design
Content strategy and organisation
Community experience design
User journey mapping
Platform implementation and management
Facilitation and member engagement

Featured Case Study
Designing and facilitating a 12-month personal and professional development and implementation learning community for women.
One of the key challenges was balancing the diverse needs, goals and levels of experience within the community while maintaining engagement over time.
My role involved creating and facilitating learning experiences that encouraged participation, reflection and practical application.
The experience reinforced the importance of designing for connection as well as content. Some of the most valuable learning often emerged through shared reflection, discussion and peer support rather than formal instruction alone.
My Approach
Rather than treating membership sites as content repositories, I approached them as learning ecosystems.
This involved:
Structuring content around learner needs and goals
Creating clear pathways through content
Designing opportunities for reflection and participation
Balancing self-directed learning with community interaction
Reducing cognitive load through intentional organisation and navigation
Supporting different levels of engagement and learning preferences
Platforms & Communities
WordPress membership site
Bespoke membership platform
ELC community
Substack publication and community
Human Insight
People rarely stay engaged because more content exists.
They stay engaged when they can find what they need, make sense of what matters and feel connected to a wider learning journey.
Designing effective learning communities means creating environments that support both autonomy and belonging.
